The anthology "History of German Language Teaching from 1945 to 1989 (Part 2)" offers a comprehensive analysis of the development of German language instruction in the two German states during the post-war period. It highlights the theories and concepts that shaped the teaching and demonstrates how these connect to the currents of the Weimar Republic. Through detailed investigations, both the differences and similarities in the practice of German language teaching in East and West Germany are elaborated. Topics such as curricula, essay instruction, assessment criteria, the literary canon, as well as teaching methods and reading books are discussed in depth. The analysis of curriculum generations and student essays allows for a historical contextualization of developments between 1945 and 1989. The results of the studies show that despite the differing political systems, similar challenges in education and instruction existed, and comparable solutions were sought. The curricula reveal significant convergences in key aspects of linguistic and literary education, as well as in the choice of methods.
