Currently, around 20,000 Germans travel to Nepal each year, with a rising trend. The fascination for the mysterious, colorful country on the roof of the world remains unbroken. One only needs to glance at the television schedule, where various documentaries compete for attention. Yet, there has not been a single comprehensive history of Nepal available in the German market until now. The first German history of Nepal by the renowned South Asia expert Axel Michaels focuses on the development of the cultural, social, and political diversity of Nepal, telling not just one story, but many: the story of water, elephants, or shamanic drums; the history of dynasties, traditions, rituals, festivals, crafts, or arts that have largely remained unchanged to this day, as time (and thus history) seems to have stood still in Nepal at times.
