East Frisian history? At first glance, the land appears flat, the Wadden Sea is gray, and the people are reserved. But upon closer inspection, everything looks quite different: Of course, Emperor Charlemagne incorporated Friesland into his empire - but the East Frisians managed to assert a number of special rights, full of stubbornness, and knowing that the emperor was far away, their land difficult to access, surrounded by moors, almost an island, and on the edge of the inhabited world.
The greatest achievement of the Frisians was, in two respects, the construction of dikes: From the areas that had been repeatedly flooded, fertile marshland emerged - but more significantly, the construction of dikes led to the emergence of "Frisian freedom": nobility and serfdom disappeared. A unique case in Europe.
A few more remarkable facts: The oldest plow in Europe, the oldest road in Germany, the most crooked tower in the world, world champions in tea drinking - the discoverer of sunspots, a Nobel laureate, or Germany's funniest Otto: All are part of East Frisian history.
