In recent decades, subject-specific didactics has established itself as an independent sub-discipline alongside linguistics, literary studies, and cultural studies in German-speaking Romance studies. However, the history of this sub-discipline remains to be written. While the history of foreign language teaching itself—predominantly a history of teaching Romance languages, especially French, until the 19th century—is already relatively well researched, there are still significant gaps in the study of the history of teacher education in Romance languages and the history of the academic discipline of subject-specific didactics. This volume aims to address these desiderata by bringing together various studies and case studies on the history of Romance subject-specific didactics and teacher education since the 19th century.
