Many historians have illusions about how easy it is to publish their work, as if publishers are just waiting to launch it into the market with high sales. Others lament a devastating crisis in the book trade and the humanities. It may seem that soon, due to shrinking library budgets and the internet, hardly any scholarly books will be published at all. What is the actual situation? It was long overdue for representatives from both sides—historians and publishers from major history publishing houses—to meet for the first time at a conference to discuss the changes in historical sciences and the book market. Here, discussions were held openly and without shying away from conflict. This volume presents the results.
