Society is a classic central concept in sociological theory, but it has traditionally also been a contentious one. The main criticism is directed against attempts to stabilize and essentialize it. Such claims about the concept seem particularly anachronistic in our increasingly globalized present, making it hardly surprising that numerous authors wish to completely turn away from it. However, it will be demonstrated here that this is a hasty conclusion that risks abandoning a concept that is particularly fruitful due to its inherent flexibility, without a comparably comprehensive category with similar explanatory power in sight. To develop this argument, a series of discussions will be conducted, ultimately culminating in a plea to regard the concept of society as a genuine category of sociological theory.
