Violence in caregiving can take many forms: it can occur in nursing homes, hospitals, or home settings, and can be perpetrated by professional caregivers, relatives, third parties, or even the patients themselves. It can be direct, through an individual, or indirect, influenced by societal factors. The term violence encompasses a very broad spectrum, ranging from physical assaults by or against caregivers, (financial) exploitation, neglect, to medication overdoses. Nevertheless, violence in caregiving has hardly been addressed so far. In this book, the experienced authors focus on the pressing phenomenon of violence against and by individuals with dementia. They explore causes and scenarios of emergence and offer suggestions for the prevention or reduction of violence in this context.
