Violence must never be forgotten: Mirjam Zadoff, head of the Munich NS Documentation Center, gathers ideas for a global culture of remembrance.
In today's societies, people live together whose biographies are shaped by different experiences of war or discrimination – sometimes spanning generations. Can they agree on a common narrative? Mirjam Zadoff understands history as the ability to answer contemporary questions from the past. She collects examples from around the world of how the memory of the history of violence is kept alive – or forgotten – in various ways: in Italy regarding the deportation of Jews, in Japan concerning the forced prostitutes, in Johannesburg about the victims of the Holocaust and colonialism. Thus, a global culture of remembrance is woven together that includes all people whose lives have been marked by a trace of violence in history.
