Product details

Since spring 1961, I have had type 1 diabetes. I lack the vital hormone insulin. I was 14 when the disease struck me. My life took a different direction, and new problems and challenges awaited me. If I wanted to cope with this, I had to fully accept my illness. By now, I have been living with it for over 56 years and have not experienced the feared late complications of diabetes to this day. This book is a helpful guide for people with type 1 diabetes and a reminder that the latest therapies—genetically engineered insulin, insulin pumps, insulin pens—are not always the best. After 19 years of treatment with genetically engineered human insulin and difficulties in recognizing hypoglycemia, I returned to the tried-and-true animal insulin. This allows me to live without unrecognized hypoglycemic episodes.
