In the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ), all sports clubs were dissolved in 1945 and their property was expropriated. At the same time, a modest resumption of organized sports activities began under the supervision of local authorities, which supported the formation of new sports communities (SG). Further steps included the establishment of the German Sports Committee (DSA) in 1948 and the 16 sports associations (SV) of the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB) starting in 1951, with an increased focus on the formation of company sports communities (BSG). The culmination of this process was the founding of the German Gymnastics and Sports Federation (DTSB) in April 1957, which ultimately included 33 specialized associations. In 1989, it had about 3.7 million members in approximately 10,700 SGs. The long-awaited catalog by many collectors, featuring nearly 11,000 high-quality images of mostly contemporary originals, encompasses the local sports communities.
