It has now been exactly 30 years since Jean-Paul Divo wrote the book on Swiss samples of federal coins since 1850. In the meantime, not only have many new samples emerged, but numerous new insights about the already known pieces have also been gained. In the volume "The Samples and Material Variants of the Confederation," not only are the trial strikes listed, but also all material variants such as gold and silver strikes are newly cataloged. In contrast, a similar compendium for the period of cantonal coinage up to 1850 is completely lacking; while there is detailed specialized literature for many cantons, a comprehensive listing of all known samples and material variants is sought in vain. Extensive visual material rounds off both volumes and makes them another standard work in Swiss numismatics.
