Spontaneous, observant, and sensitive: The young Giovanni Giacometti wrote letters to his parents living in Stampa in the Bergell from Munich, Paris, and Rome, and he also maintained lively correspondence with his friends. Even when he returned to Switzerland, he continued to correspond actively with collectors. This includes the Solothurn paper manufacturer Oscar Miller, the patron and photographer Gertrud Dübi-Müller, the Winterthur ophthalmologist Arthur Hahnloser and his wife Hedy Hahnloser-Bühler, the industrialist and president of the Winterthur Art Association Richard Bühler, and Richard Kisling, the president of the exhibition commission of the Zurich Art Society. This critical edition encompasses Giovanni Giacometti's correspondence, complete with translations and explanations, biographical information about the letter partners, and a detailed index. Enhanced by drawings, some previously unpublished black-and-white photographs, and color reproductions of the paintings—totaling nearly 700 documents—a picture of the era before the First World War and Giovanni Giacometti's personal situation emerges.
