Multicultural marriages do not have better or worse chances of success than same-culture marriages. Whether a Tunisian marries his cousin or a Swiss marries his childhood friend, the difficulties seem to be the same. Success in both cases depends on the same factors. The main reason for the failure of many multicultural relationships is that both sides know too little about each other and about the respective other culture. They do not allow each other time to get to know this culture. One believes they are marrying a Tunisian, but unconsciously binds themselves to an entire family, often to a whole village! The reasons for marriage are fundamentally different in European and North African countries: While in the West marriages are primarily based on love and personal choice, in North Africa it is still very common for weddings to take place due to material expectations.
