Faith and not without reason? Reason not without faith? In the era of Romanticism, faith and reason did not exclude each other; rather, they even conditioned one another. One of the most essential questions in this context was that of the constitution of man: Is man dualistic, consisting of body and soul, by nature? Or does man, analogous to the Christian image of God, consist of three parts: body, soul, and spirit? The latter position was supported by the philosophy of German Idealism according to Schelling and Hegel, which placed the semantics and metaphorics of the spirit at the center of their philosophy. In contrast, the dualists did not simply continue the Cartesian thought that had previously defined the Enlightenment era. In Faith and Reason, the position of the author Johann C., who argues from a dualistic tradition, is presented.
