We took the 75th anniversary of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration as an opportunity to engage in serious discussions with the entire faculty about the possibilities and challenges in the fields of management research and education. Empirical studies within and comparisons between organizations have always been fundamental to achieving the goals of Harvard Business School, namely the education of managers and the improvement of management practice. In some ways, we are developing our own research model and have often broken through the boundaries of traditional disciplines and methodologies to obtain all the necessary concepts and methods for a specific project. We are, in any case, less concerned with validating existing theories than with gaining new insights, although we are often drawn to problems of great scope.
