At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, there was a spirit of renewal in Christianity. The Holiness Movement provided important impulses. The evangelization of the whole world was within reach. Many missionary works, Bible schools, and communities were established. The Welsh Revival and the Pentecostal Movement brought the Holy Spirit to the forefront. People expected, hoped for, and prayed for a new outpouring of the Spirit. This came, but differently than anticipated, with speaking in tongues, revelations, and turbulence. In exaggerations, "the human" took center stage. Personal experience became more important than community. The longing expectations turned into unfulfillable demands. The Berlin Declaration marked the conclusion. A deep rift ran through Christianity in Germany. During this time, Otto Stockmayer (1838-1917) lived. He was one of the pioneers.
