Wherever sophisticated devices were meant to ease life, Western societies have become dependent on them. Man, enslaved by technology, the financial market, and consumption, is more vulnerable and unfree than ever. In his fundamental critique of modernity, Pierre Rabhi exposes its temptations as mere illusions. The new immeasurability of the overwhelming information society, the premises of compulsive progress and "more and more," as well as the promises of happiness through consumption, do not signify the liberation of humanity but rather its gradual subjugation.
