Masterpieces of Western book art from the Middle Ages, spanning from the 6th to the 16th century, are presented in an opulently illustrated exhibition catalog from the Kreisgalerie Schloss Messkirch. The range of 76 valuable manuscripts and 37 full-page illustrated, often breathtakingly beautiful miniatures includes liturgical gospels, sacramentaries, and apocalypses, as well as private prayer books and books of hours, extending to secular epic poetry, travel accounts, and descriptions of plants and animals. Among the works featured is the gospel of Emperor Otto III, created shortly before the turn of the millennium on the island monastery of Reichenau, as well as the magnificent Berthold sacramentary from Weingarten dating back to the early 13th century, the well-known Donaueschingen manuscript of the Nibelungenlied (C), and the most famous of all books of hours, "les très riches heures" of the Duc de Berry from the 15th century.
