On his return journey from India, where he had held a command, Louis Marie Julien Viaud disembarked in the port city of Bandar Bushehr on the Persian Gulf and set out on April 17, 1900, with a caravan for a horseback journey through pre-modern Persia during the reign of Muzaffar ad-Din Shah (1896-1907). The journey took him through Shiraz, Isfahan, and from there by carriage to Tehran, finally reaching Bandar Anzali on the Caspian Sea on June 6 of the same year.
