The Klassik Stiftung Weimar is currently exhibiting around 50 pieces of furniture from Goethe's collection in his residence at Frauenplan. These cabinets once housed the 50,000 objects from his art and natural science collections. Goethe owned cabinets for natural specimens, majolica, graphics, as well as coins and medals. The surviving collection of furniture is comprehensively examined for the first time in this book. Based on art technological analyses and extensive source research, not only are the sometimes surprising original appearances of the cabinets revealed, but a picture also emerges of Goethe's usage and presentation forms of his various collections. Collection cabinets organize items in a specific system and simultaneously create perception situations. As accessories of collections, these functional pieces of furniture are often overlooked. However, it is precisely these containers and their object histories that provide important insights into historical collecting practices.
