An old world order is coming to an end, and a new one is yet to emerge. We are in the midst of the fourth humiliation of humanity: the world we have created can no longer be controlled. Copernicus already shook the world with the realization that the Earth is not at the center of the universe, but rather that the planets orbit the sun. Darwin humiliated humanity with the news that humans descend from apes, and Freud informed us that we are not masters in our own house. Now, the fourth humiliation is upon us: we are learning that we cannot steer the world as we have previously imagined. The new VUCA concept, further developed by the author team, presents the world as volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. Now it is crucial how we set the course for the future. The author team offers approaches on how we can build future competence.
