Product details

The Gorani, Slavic-speaking Muslims in the border region between Albania, Kosovo, and Macedonia, have a long history of migration that dates back to the Ottoman Empire. Valued as gunsmiths and confectioners, the young men who traveled to the cities of the Ottoman Empire represented an important source of income for the mountain villages of Gora. With the dissolution of Yugoslavia, not only were the routes to Belgrade, Sarajevo, or Zagreb blocked. As Slavic Muslims, they found themselves caught between the chairs of Albanian and Serbian nationalism, while migration to the EU is becoming increasingly difficult. Political scientist Thomas Schmidinger provides insight into the living conditions and political circumstances of this marginalized minority, their migration history, and the cultural traces left by their migration.
