With the main breakthrough on October 15, 2010, the vision of the world's longest tunnel became a reality. Over 150 km of tunnels, shafts, cross passages, and pits had to be excavated to enable the future operation of the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel. The second volume of the planned trilogy documents the creation of this monumental construction project. The book provides insight into the fascinating world of tunnel construction and highlights various topics related to the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. It offers an overview of the entire project and vividly illustrates the challenges faced by the project participants during the construction phase. Until the Gotthard Base Tunnel is put into operation, the focus will now be on the railway technology equipment, which will be the subject of the third volume.
