A hot summer in Upper Swabia. Daniel Bönle, a free spirit and "jack of all trades" in the church community of an 800-inhabitant village on the edge of the Pfrunger-Burgweiler marsh, is just looking to take a relaxing ride on his Harley Davidson when he stumbles upon a corpse in a dilapidated chapel. A cast-iron cross is embedded in the skull. Fear spreads through the village, as shortly after, a German shepherd is discovered half-buried with a cross in its mouth. Neither Commissioner Härmle and his attractive assistant nor Daniel and his friend Deodonatus Ngumbu, the pastor from Nairobi of the small community, can make sense of the mysterious events at first.
