In Máirtín Ó Cadhain's Cré na Cille, all the protagonists are dead and buried, yet underground they meet again - lamenting, gossiping, cursing, swearing, and scheming to their heart's content. Hell? Perhaps. But above all, it is a linguistic fireworks display, whose author is rightly regarded as the Irish-language Joyce. Ó Cadhain's cult novel from 1949 is the most important book of Gaelic-speaking Ireland, a myth in the rest of Ireland - until Alan Titley dared to undertake the first English translation, published in May 2015 as The Dirty Dust; several languages followed. The novel will be released in German on St. Patrick's Day 2017 (March 17). The well-known translator Gabriele Haefs has translated it into German.
