Product details
Simon Schaupp's study "Digital Self-Monitoring" does not portray self-trackers as obsessive nerds, but rather questions the societal causes behind this practice: What political and economic structures make it necessary to constantly monitor and optimize oneself? To answer this question, Schaupp traces self-optimization back to its historical roots in cybernetic control theory through feedback loops and outlines a theory of cybernetic capitalism. It becomes clear that the omnipresence of miniaturized connected computers fundamentally changes our society. Not only are communication and goods production increasingly merging into one and the same process, but a new form of social control is also emerging, which is fundamentally based on continuous digital feedback.
