"The Green Henry" is considered one of the great Bildungsromans of German literature, but it can also be understood as the true "life book" of Gottfried Keller, which occupied him for about forty years. Eight literary scholars have attempted to read The Green Henry anew. In addition to issues of the edition and representations of Keller's poetics and worldview in exemplary text analyses, questions of narrative theory, the history of knowledge, the relationship between painting and literature, and the impact of The Green Henry on 20th-century literature are addressed. The result is a multifaceted volume that aims to provide new insights for both scholars and enthusiasts to revisit Keller's great novel.
