Abstract: Statistics from the Federal Statistical Office show that in the year 2000 alone, out of 194,410 divorced marriages, approximately 148,190 minor children were affected by their parents' divorce. This number is steadily increasing. Although one in three marriages in Germany fails today, this and alternative family forms are still perceived and judged as a deficit in society. The children, in particular, suffer as a result. The paper focuses on how, as the title suggests, children cope with divorce, their reactions to it, and the impact of this experience on their personality development.
