Abstract: Debt counseling is considered a part of social counseling, alongside addiction counseling, life counseling, etc., and thus as an independent area within social work. The clientele of debt counseling consists of over-indebted individuals. Over-indebtedness occurs when monthly expenses and payments exceed income. Contributing factors to the increasing over-indebtedness in the population include rising living costs, unemployment, and unforeseen events. Debt counseling is viewed as a support service for over-indebted individuals and families. Its goal is to reduce or eliminate over-indebtedness and its associated problems.
