Abstract: This paper primarily deals with Nero's first five years of reign as emperor, his 'Golden Age'. When one thinks of Nero today, they either associate it with the computer program Nero Burning ROM, which allows for burning DVDs, or with the Roman Emperor Nero (reign: 54 - 68 AD), who is closely linked in collective memory to the Great Fire of Rome. Emperor Nero is generally regarded as a cruel ruler. He embodies the archetype of a mad tyrant. There are very few historical figures who have a worse reputation than he does. However, his reign was not solely characterized by murderous caprice; he also had an artistic side and, although he had a tendency towards self-aggrandizement, he was considered to be musically talented.
