Abstract: We live in a performance-oriented society. Daily, we are confronted with expectations of performance from ourselves or from others. Media presents us with an image of optimal performance every day, whether in sports, politics, technology, culture, or even in everyday life, as well as in absurd record-breaking feats for the Guinness Book of Records. Society increasingly associates performance with something positive. Achieving something is always good and meaningful—regardless of the context. However, in a performance-oriented society, the pressure is also growing. People compete with one another, measure themselves against the achievements of others, and feel frustrated.
