Abstract: Georg Heym's "The God of the City" is one of the poems that disappoints the expectation of continuity evoked by the title of his collection "The Last Day" with its gloomy apocalyptic scenarios and, alongside "The Demons of the Cities," the "Berlin" poems, or "The Suburb," depicts life in a metropolis. As a work of early expressionism, "The God of the City" is of course also influenced by other motifs, including the non-mimetic representation of reality, the longing for destruction as a precursor to a new conception of humanity, and the mastery of nature through technological progress. This context, hinted at here, provides the framework for the following commentary.
