Abstract: This thesis focuses on social robots in geriatric care. To enable the use of social robots in elderly care, it is necessary to have a better understanding of the experiences older adults have had with the use of social robots in private settings as well as in care facilities, and how their attitudes towards them are. By examining the perception of social robots by older adults, this work aims to deepen the existing knowledge about the use of robots in geriatric care and contribute to the goal of responsible design, implementation, and utilization. The purpose of this literature review is to identify the opportunities that arise from the use of social robots to assist older individuals. These opportunities include interaction with the robot, using the robot as a companion, support for social interaction and communication, as well as alleviating the burden on caregivers. The overview examines all social robots and presents current work in this field, deliberately avoiding a focus on a specific application or type of robot. The goal of this systematic literature analysis is to gain more insights into how older adults experience, perceive, think about, and feel regarding the use of social robots in geriatric care.

By 2050, the world population will exceed two billion people aged over 60. The shortage of nursing professionals and the growing aging population present additional challenges.
