Abstract: Switzerland is a country in the center of Europe, yet it gives the impression of wanting to remain apart. It is not a member of the European Union, and one might think that Switzerland has no interest in shaping Europe. However, this self-imposed isolation does not make Switzerland a weak country. With a gross domestic product of about 58,000 Swiss francs (approximately 38,000 euros) per capita per year, Switzerland is among the strongest economies in the world. Additionally, the cities of Zurich and Geneva rank high on the global list of Western cities with the highest quality of life. These facts naturally make Switzerland a popular destination for immigration. Migration movements, as will be discussed next.
