Abstract: The robber chief Hannikel, whose real name was Jakob Reinhard, is a colorful figure from the 18th century, though he has largely been forgotten today. For more than 20 years, he stole and robbed in the area around Pirmasens, instilling fear and terror in the local population with his gang. As a gypsy and vagabond, Hannikel and his people stood outside early modern society, living in their own culture with their own rules and laws, and were always at risk of persecution.
