Abstract: The work deals with the establishment of foreigner education and the gradual replacement process by intercultural education. The question of how to deal with individuals from other cultures and countries of origin in one's own society has been a central topic for every host country since the beginning of migration movements. Migration movements are caused by various reasons.

The paper will focus on the period of the guest worker influx in the 1960s. This has subsequently led to a central paradigm shift in education regarding the treatment of migrants. An initial reaction marked the establishment of foreigner education, also known as assimilation education, due to its strongly assimilatory orientation. In this context, assimilation means the adaptation of individual individuals or social groups to others. This involves adopting the corresponding attitudes, norms, and behaviors of the majority.

A closer examination of the emergence and the central characteristics and goals that have arisen from various scientific debates will clarify the relationship between assimilation and the foreigner education practiced. In particular, there will be a focus on the criticism of foreigner education and its subsequent replacement by intercultural education.
