He was one of the greatest military leaders in history, imposing his political will across Europe. Napoleon Bonaparte, who came from a poor Corsican noble family, experienced a meteoric rise in post-revolutionary, crisis-ridden France. By the age of 24, he was already a general, soon became the commander-in-chief of the Italian army, and ultimately, through a coup, the first consul. At 35, he crowned himself emperor. Fortune left him at the peak of his power. The Battle of Leipzig in 1813 sealed his fate, and Napoleon was exiled to Elba. However, he returned. At Waterloo, he fought his last battle and lost. St. Helena, a remote island in the South Atlantic, became the site of his final exile.
