Khmer, the official language of Cambodia, is the mother tongue of the Khmer people and is influenced by the culture of the Southeast Asian peninsula. It is spoken by 14 million native speakers and 2 million second-language speakers, and unlike the neighboring languages Thai, Lao, and the distantly related Vietnamese, it is not a tonal language. The author To Loeuy aims to introduce both the language and its script in an understandable way to Germans who wish to learn it. The numerous short lessons provide initial knowledge and skills that enable learners to connect linguistically with the people and culture of Cambodia. Another goal of the textbook is to give Cambodian youth and adults the opportunity to preserve their mother tongue.
