Anton L. - formerly an unlucky tour guide, now an unhappy tax officer - wakes up one morning in his subtenant room to discover that all his fellow humans have vanished. Simply gone, swept away by an unnamed catastrophe without a trace. Slowly, Anton resigns himself to his fate and sets out in search of the lost world: the last hero in the Bildungsroman of the end times. A modern-day Doctor Faust - inevitably a more ordinary version, yet burdened with various memories of different Gretchen figures and also afflicted with a fatal (and consequential) inclination towards the higher (or lower) - finds himself at the crossroads of baroque and bomb, mysticism and plastic, apocalypse and laughter, grappling with the final things, delving into the reasons and to his own downfall.
