The outer green belt in Cologne, created in the 1920s by Mayor Konrad Adenauer and the city planner Fritz Schumacher from Hamburg on the site of the former Prussian fortifications, is an urban green system that is unique in Central Europe. Since 2015, the green belt circular path has traversed this protected landscape park over a length of 63 kilometers. Forests and meadows alternate, but highways, railway tracks, and industrial buildings also shape the marked route on both sides of the Rhine. Divided into ten stages, each starting and ending conveniently accessible by public transport, all facets of Cologne can be explored; either as a leisurely walk or several stages as a longer day trip.
