School reading instruction often gives the impression that struggling readers should be protected from reading. Short texts are read together in class, and the main points are then summarized by the proficient readers for everyone. This means that weak readers do not need to take responsibility for their own reading process or engage personally in reading comprehension. Current reading promotion concepts, on the other hand, aim to practice individual components of the reading process in isolation. This approach is also sensible for training basic reading skills. However, at some point, students are always required to successfully handle a wide range of different and longer texts. These texts must be selected independently based on current purposes and needs and read with understanding.
