Even the initial thoughts on a building design encounter a framework of building laws that establish essential determinants of the design. Some of these regulations are perceived more as construction restrictions than as assistance. However, they are not natural laws but rather instruments created by humans. They require constant revision. As Gregory Grämiger demonstrates, building legislation in Switzerland is based on outdated premises that have been incorporated into the legal system over the past hundred years, but which hardly meet current requirements. The author examines the influence of legislation on the built environment from both a historical and contemporary perspective. Through specific topics and case studies, the publication discusses problems with today's building laws and outlines possible solutions. It serves as a call to architects.
