With the Baroque, a variety of emblematic and visually impactful forms of representation have developed. Attributing this to a distant, cryptic world of symbols would contradict both the artistic and intellectual aims of conveying complex matters. Moreover, according to a dictum by Aby Warburg, it should not merely be about the "solution of a picture puzzle." What unites the models of seeing and recognizing discussed in this volume is their radical openness and curiosity, setting no limits but instead allowing for all conceivable possibilities of merging ideas - extending to "phantasmata" and "figments of the imagination" - with intelligible forms leading to "forms of knowledge." This is reflected in the thematically grouped sections of the Baroque summer course, such as "The 'Meaning' between Image and Image Carrier.".
