In the 1930s, comprehensive spatial planning was theoretically discussed in Switzerland and further developed in practical implementation after World War II. It was not until 1980 that it received official recognition as a state task with the Spatial Planning Act. Hans Marti (1913-1993) is one of the most important pioneers of systematic local and regional planning. He tested and applied various planning methods and instruments throughout his diverse career. Through lectures and publications, as well as his long-standing role as editor of the Swiss Construction Newspaper, he significantly contributed to the discussion in professional circles and the public. By consistently applying existing laws, he advanced the development of planning law and thus prepared the way for modern legislation. Some municipalities owe their orderly growth to Marti's interventions.
