The church in Altstetten, built by Werner M. Moser from 1936 to 1941, is one of the key works of modern Swiss church architecture. Formally and conceptually, it bridges the gap between international modernism and the existing regional building tradition—an early example of "building in context." Prominently located on a hill, it forms a harmonious ensemble with the old village church from the 15th century. With its various building components—a tall church tower, the church space, a community hall in the basement, and classrooms in the side wing—the new church complex embodied a successful synthesis of diverse functional and architectural needs from the very beginning. Since 2006, architects Silvio Schmed and Arthur Ruegg have continued this with careful restoration, some bold interventions, and an invisible expansion.
