Product details

Not only our own experiences shape our relationship with the city, but also the images that have been created and disseminated over centuries. Books and graphics have always provided the medium to imagine and experiment with new and bold urban spaces that reality could not offer. The book published in conjunction with the exhibition at ETH Zurich conveys, through important and valuable original documents, newly photographed and generously illustrated, how the drawn and built city shaped each other. Among these are the Schedel World Chronicle from 1493, Vitruvius editions from the early 16th to the 19th century, guides to perspective by Vredeman de Vries, Pozzo, and Galli Bibiena, fortification treaties by Dürer, Specklin, and Vauban, folios by Piranesi, Weinbrenner, and Schinkel, plans by Semper, and manuals by Le Corbusier and Ros.
