Ulrich Stucky (1925-2003) is one of the most interesting figures of the second generation of modern Swiss architecture. Influenced by Sigfried Giedion and Alvar Aalto, with whom he worked for five years—longer than any of the other many Swiss guards in Aalto's office—the architect from Bern left behind a remarkable body of work. At the same time, he was involved in numerous cultural and scientific projects. His architectural and planning practice, which ranges from private homes to regional planning interventions, is infused with broad interests in archaeology, architectural history, fine arts, and music. Stucky allowed these disciplines to engage in a fruitful dialogue as a lateral thinker in the best sense of the word. He collaborated with a number of prominent authors who knew him from close joint work and regarded him as a lucid conversational partner.
