Product details
Antanas Skema (1910-1961) left behind a novel that continues to exert significant influence on Lithuanian literature: "The White Sheet." Written between 1952 and 1954, it has never been translated into German before. The protagonist, Antanas Garsva, a Lithuanian exile writer, works as a liftboy in a high-rise hotel in New York City. Antanas Garsva, the alter ego of Antanas Skema, has fled Lithuania from the Soviets but struggles with the hypocritical Lithuanian mainstream culture and the triviality of American consumer society. Through flashbacks and reflections, he attempts to process his dramatic life path and find meaning in it. In contemporary New York, he finds himself entangled in a love triangle with his mistress Elena and her husband. The tumultuous episodes create a puzzle of the 20th century that Skema presents with power.
