William Heinesen (1900-1991) captured what life is like in the Faroe Islands in his novels, poems, and stories like no one else. "Here We Dance!" offers a selection of his best tales, in which Heinesen addressed both the archaic and the modern, capturing the specific island life of the Faroese in his unique tone. The stories and their protagonists are shaped by the rough sea winds, rugged and washed by the waves—people and words stubbornly forge their paths in the face of the eternal expanse of sky and sea. Life may seem small on the remote islands in the North Atlantic, where just 50,000 people live, but the longing for faraway places is great, and in the small things, the entire cosmos can be read more intensely. Heinesen grew up bilingual and wrote in Danish to reach a larger audience.
