Frans Eemil Sillanpää (1888-1964) has added another building block to his great Finnish narrative with "Jung entschlafen" (Young Passed Away). The tuberculosis death of the beautiful 22-year-old country girl Silja is at the beginning and also at the end of the novel. Its subtitle is "The Last Shoot of a Family Tree," and the novel begins with the misfortune of the parents, simple farmers who lose their farm and die one after the other. Silja, the only daughter, must now make her way as a maid in foreign households until she comes to the home of a kind, single professor. There, she experiences her first love during Midsummer with the student Armas, who has come to the countryside for the summer. However, at the end of the summer, Armas goes off to war and is wounded. The war year of 1917 also leaves its mark on Silja, as she finds herself caught between the fronts by following her inner voice.
